In April 2025, overseas travel to the United States grew 8%, marking a strong rebound from the decline in March. Similar to March, overall travel spend increased, but by less than 1% as domestic travel trends remained steady compared with the prior year. Domestic air passengers was virtually flat, and hotel demand decreased 1% versus the prior year. National park visits in April were lower than the same month last year for the third consecutive month.
Travel and broader economic indicators continued to tell a mixed story in April. The travel trade deficit grew to $7 billion in March, reflecting the month’s international visitation decline. Employment growth continued, and inflation continued to remain in check both for the economy overall and for travel related purchases. But economic concerns are weighing on future expectations as consumer confidence continued to fall in April. Travel continued to be prioritized with 92% reporting having a trip planned for the next 6 months, but equal numbers saying it’s a good versus bad time to spend money on travel.
Data Notes: April air travel data from NTTO does not yet include visits from Canada and Mexico. Year over year comparisons may also be affected by the comparable period in 2024 including the easter holiday, which fell in March of 2024 and April in 2025.
